Knowing what works & what doesn't...

  • Please remember if you are a smoker, do NOT smoke right before an interview. Breath mints may temporarily mask things however they will not and cannot hide the smell of cigarette smoke in your hair, on your hands or on your clothes, especially if you need to get in a lift with your interviewer to reach another floor.
  • Do not chew gum in any interview.  Instead have a breath mint prior to reaching your destination
  • Please have your mobile phone on SILENT.  Not on ring or vibrate.  It is very disrespectful to still hear a phone ‘vibrating’ throughout an interview
  • Always put out your hand when greeting your interviewer and make eye contact throughout the interview
  • Try not to fidget in your seat – this gives the impression you are either bored or overly nervous
  • Be prepared for behavioural type interview questions.  For e.g. “Can you tell me about a time when you had to use attention to detail”, or “Can you give me an example of where you used time management in your last role”.  The interviewer is trying to ascertain how you have solved particular situations in the past and how you would apply these to their position.  If for whatever reason you have never been in that situation before, then it’s advisable to respond with “I actually have not been in that situation before, but if I were, I would actually do this …..”.  That at least shows you are using your initiative, know-how and common sense and are trying to answer the question as best you can.
  • Lastly, please remember to be yourself in interview and don't try to be someone you are not.  No one knows YOU better than yourself so really, how can you get any questions wrong?
